Eckerd in January was cold enough for me, a Florida native, to wear a big furry brown hat outdoors. I remember putting it on once after class when Elie Wiesel laughed with me and remarked that it made me look Siberian. Class means things like critical analysis of literary texts and long discussions over the interpretation of history but also those fun little dumb moments you remember forever too. I feel the loss of Elie Wiesel as a cultural icon, a dedicated teacher and as a friend.
