Theatre for Social Change

Join us on an exploration of advocacy, activism, and social change through theatre.

Blending the strengths of Eckerd College and Asolo Repertory Theatre (Sarasota, FL) this program challenges students to be storytellers of the change they wish to see in the world.

This summer program is ideal for rising 10th through 12th grade students interested in producing and performance, community building, activism and social change, story adaptation, and the creative process.

June 18-23, 2023

Students entering 10th, 11th or 12th grade in Fall 2023

$850 per student

Cost includes: participation in (and transportation for) all sessions, activities, program supplies, field trips, entrance fees, use of college recreational facilities, meals, lodging and snacks.

Scholarships and financial assistance

Theatre for All scholarships and financial assistance for eligible students are available thanks to a generous contribution from the Barancik Foundation.

Activities

Students enrolled in this program will:

  • Practice dynamic theatrical strategies that connect with social consciousness, such as Theatre of the Oppressed, Playback Theatre, Forum Theatre, etc.
  • Use adaptation, dramaturgy, direction, and performance to produce a classic story that reflects what matters to each member of the artistic team
  • Participate in facility tours and community conversations at Asolo Rep and Eckerd College
  • Enjoy evening activities led by our residential counselors and more!

A center for theatrical excellence, Asolo Rep stages up to fifteen productions every season, spanning a diverse repertoire of newly commissioned plays, bold reinterpretations of contemporary and classical works, and provocative new musical theatre experiences.

Theatre at Eckerd

Theatre is education for life. The communications, analytical and artistic skills learned as an Eckerd College Theatre major will benefit students in any field of endeavor. Eckerd’s Bachelor of Arts in Theatre introduces students to acting, directing, design and technical theatre, while our 2+2 Bachelor of Fine Arts focuses on performance.

Facilities

Few colleges have a more attractive setting than Eckerd College. Our 188-acre waterfront campus provides a magnificent atmosphere and safe environment. Eckerd College is located in St. Petersburg, just off I-275, exit 17.

Directions & Map

Counselors

Residential counselors work with students in the late afternoons, evenings and overnight. Staff consists of well-trained Eckerd College students eager to share their enthusiasm for learning.

Housing

Students will live in air-conditioned Eckerd College student residence halls, double- or triple- room occupancy, reserved exclusively for participants in this program. Counselors will be present in each single-sex residence hall.

Meals

Student participants will eat in the main cafeteria which can accommodate allergies, lactose and gluten-free diets. We also have kosher, vegetarian and vegan options available to students. If you have particular needs, please be sure to note them on the General and Medical Information form.

Teaching Artists

Asolo Rep Teaching Artists and Staff are highly-qualified educators, performers, and artists who share a passion for teaching. Many have advanced degrees and teaching certifications, while alos having extensive stage, film, and performance credits. Through direct programming creation and collaboration with Asolo Rep Education & Engagement staff, students who work with these Teaching Artists receive dynamic and substantive artistic and educational experiences across all programming areas.

Processing fee of $25 is non-refundable.

No refund will be issued for the following:

  • If a participant fails to show up for the program.
  • If a participant is dismissed from the program by the College.
